The history of Ayurveda and the birth of Mediherbs

For over 500 years, Ayurveda has been at the heart of Sri Lanka’s healing traditions, blending nature’s wisdom with holistic wellness. Mediherbs was founded to carry forward this ancient legacy, preserving the art of Ayurvedic healing through generations of expert physicians and time-tested herbal remedies.
Our journey began with Ayur. Phy. W.I. Fernando, a renowned Ayurvedic practitioner whose expertise in eye care, pediatrics, and general wellness earned him national and international recognition. Under his visionary leadership, Mediherbs was established in 2004, making authentic Ayurvedic healing accessible through herbal infusions crafted from 100% natural herbs.

The history of ayurveda and the birth of Mediherbs

Sri Lanka is an Eastern country with a written history of over 2560 years. According to our historical anecdotes and Indian historical folk stories, it has been recorded that Sri Lanka has a history of over 3500 years which predates written history. Our local ayurvedic tradition is just as old. The religious, traditional, political and social connections between India and Sri Lanka that have been passed down since ancient times have nurtured the mutual technological systems, important moments of daily lives, and medicinal teachings. As recorded in Sri Lanka’s history the country had been subjected to invasions by chola, pandya, and kerala, on multiple occasions. Through each of those invasions, our two countries were brought closer together. As a result, Sri Lankan ayurveda became so intertwined with Indian ayurveda, thus making it impossible to think of independently. This intertwined ayurveda travelled through Lankan history, evolving across the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, and Kurunegala eras reaching the Kotte Kingdom in the 13th century. This is why there are multiple relics of health centres among ancient Sri Lankan relics. In the first half of the 16th century, during the Kotte kingdom, the country was gradually occupied by its first Western invaders – the Portuguese. Owing to the Western occupations, beginning with the Portuguese, and later on the Dutch and the British, various elements, including ayurveda, began to perish. The ayurveda that thus began to wither was protected by the hands of the ayurvedic lineages, who honed it under the gurukula systems – the familial and ancestral method of teaching. The ayurvedic lineage we belong to goes back to the Kotte kingdom, or the 15th century. Presently, it goes beyond 500 years. Such is the historicity of our ayurvedic ancestry. Mediherbs (Pvt) Ltd., established in 2004, was conceived upon this ayurvedic heritage. It was founded under the guidance of late W. I. Fernando, a renowned ayurvedic physician. He was decorated with state awards by the Sri Lankan government, and also served the country as a member of parliament, called on by the national list. He had represented both Sri Lanka and ayurveda internationally, in India, the United States, England, Germany, and Austria, where he was applauded and celebrated for his mastery. Following in his footsteps, the company has also been led by late M. R. Wattage, his son and a venerated ayurvedic physician. Presently, the products of our company are made with the supervision and guidance of ayurvedic physician Darshanie Wattage, a carrier and confidant to our hereditary teachings. An extension of our hereditary ayurvedic practice, Mediherbs aspires to bring traditional ayurvedic treatments to you in an accessible and convenient manner. Our products are available as herbal infusions presented in easy-use teabags, to be consumed as medicinal supplements. Owing to its natural, herbal composition and having been prepared according to ayurvedic teachings, they also have the significant benefit of being void of side effects, and can thus be taken for prolonged periods. Over the past twenty years Mediherbs has shared its products throughout Sri Lanka, as well as across the globe – including Canada, the United States, Japan, Ivory Coast, and Russia.
